Chinese all over the world celebrates the ' Tang Yuen ' - Winter Solstice festival which falls today in Malaysia . Its a yearly celebration in the Chinese Calender to observe the beginning of winter (refering to the then China - Malaysia : currently wet and gloomy and a bit of sun rays or no sun at all) and maybe a reminder that a new year is coming. Having "Tang Yuen", the glutinous rice ball cooked in sugar syrup or which ever the traditions calls for (there are many varieties now) is a must, as it symbolize complete happiness and purity.I loved those colored rice balls in santan(coconut) , and those that has filling of 'gula melaka' (brown sugar) it kinda reminds me of "onde-onde" a local dessert.
Happy Winter Solstice Festival !
