Sunday Brunch Meet

Had a little meet up with three great ladies during the weekend over a delicious Japanese buffet spread. Everyone was camera shy, so you only see the chopsticks going for the fried soft shell crab minus one, who is holding the camera. This is especially for Jess, who is in down under and couldn't join us......this time ;P

The meet was considered short, about 3 hours of non-stop yakking and eating, as Margaret put it, devoured with gusto in between showing off books, charts, stitching in progress, recent purchases and recent finishes including my Mary and a tiny itsy bitsy....... gossips...LOL Shhhh........actually can't remember what it was about...LOL, THE FOOD, thanks to June and for the photos and I confessed, stole from the group's album.

Chicken Sukiyaki

Edamame and pickles

Fried Oysters Tempura
Beef with Garlic

Teppenyaki and Salmon
Desserts - Doriyaki, Mickey Mouse shape, specially made for June instead of that normal looking round shaped Doriyaki and that's not all, there were plateful of yummies that didn't got snap, LOL .

It was a great get-together, a great stress relieved for me too..LOL and June, thanks so much for the treat, the food so yummy at the so famous Kampachi. It was great to meet everyone, more upclose and personal. Thou, we did wrote earlier that this is a ' no gifts' meet, the lunch itself was a treat from June, Margaret brought stamped fabric pieces for us to pick, shown are my selection. She also gave lots of cut ribbons in various colors. Barbara gave the fabric trim card with her sweet coffee dyed ric-rac. (You can check-out the trim card tutorial by Alma here ) and here's my simple gift for everyone, store bought. Its a brooch that I bought from my trip to Hatyai in October, was a bit concerned that I might not have time to stitch something for everyone for the meet, so I had to make sure that I gave some thoughts for the ladies where possible. The brooch is in the shape of a Loy Krathong's vessel, a Thai water festival offering that was supposed to bring great blessings.

My Giveaway arrived

Am very glad that my package to Cindy who won my giveaway arrived safely and I can now revealed. Japanese Charity Fair

Two Sundays ago. Thanks to Eling who got me the tickets and had to apologize for being late as I had to wait for Diane to finish her lesson on that Sunday morning. While Diane's just completed her schools final exams on Friday, her additional classes for her piano lessons started that Sunday, and we were only told of it on Saturday. It was something that we knew it was coming but never thought it would be on a Sunday. It had always been on weekdays. Her first part of the Yamaha Grade 5 exams falls on November 23.

Back to the fair, like last year, it also houses several local charity organizations. Here are some pictures from the fair. Interesting bags, tea cosy, pot holders, patchwork and quilts Playful cats, no details of the chart or the fabric but looks like evenweave 32 ct or 40ct.
Toilet Roll paper holder and letter holder with cross stitched design mostly on aida fabrics and some stuffed animalsPainted Fridge magnets
Bags, tote, book covers,coasters, purse
Fabric made strawberry potpourri and crocheted jar covers
Crocheted dish cloth and more jar covers
Interesting Japanese craft
My haul while Diane played the Ennchi game of fishing balloons out from a pool of water and she got 2 out of the maximum 3 trials and she refused to be photograph!

Thanks for coming, appreciate your comments and have a great week ahead. I will try to catch up with my blog round soonest.

Two Festivals and One Parade

I'll begin my 1st November posting by recap some happenings in October that I had not posted. Firstly, Mid-Autumn Festival or the Moon Cake Festival falls on October 3rd and the beauty of this festival to me are the moon cake boxes.I have been collecting the boxes intended for finishing that somehow never got around to doing it. Every year, new box design appeared on the market to lure buyer and you'll get a gift bag to hold them; the whole package is often given as a gift to family and friends . We usually stay at home and savor the moon cakes with Chinese tea but this year it coincide with MIL's birthday and so the family had 4 tables of family and friends at the restaurant

The 2nd Festival for the month in October falls on the 17th is Diwali festival
A Hindu festival that marks the victory of good over evil, and uplifting of spiritual darkness. Symbolically it marks the homecoming of goodwill and faith after an absence, as suggested by the Ramayana.

October 18 marks the begining of the 9 Emperor Gods Festival where devotees normally observed 3 or 9 days of vegetarian. Such festivity normally ends with a parade on the eve of the ninth day, but in Hatyai, Thailand, the parade was held on the eve of the 6th day . Was here last year for the festivity with my MIL, this time I was with Jamis.
The parade, a carnival-like atmosphere pervades the street. Participants in the festival dressed all in white which has come to be translated as abstinence from eating meat, poultry, seafood, and dairy products.
The purpose of this festival, in its simplest terms, is to provide a venue for the annual renewal of cosmic power which rejuvenates human life and allows human conflicts to be resolved.

A bit on crafting for the week that was, the only stitching done is my square for Margaret W's Christmas RR. Wasn't feeling well for the entire week due to a mild sore throat that gave me a mild fever and a cough that followed thereafter. The medication that the doctor prescribed made me drowsy and very sleepy. My Santa design is Project #23159, a freebie from Michaels and I am the last to stitch. On October 30th, Mom had an appointment with her Ophthalmologists, to kill the time while waiting for her at the hospital, I took with me some threads and a tape measure and crocheted this in the waiting room. The second one with arcylic yarns .
The mailman brought me a wonderful mail yesterday. I was RAK by Tracey, from my wishlist. Tracey, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart, the chart arrived with the button intact, thanks for the extra care taken, I appreciate it alot. It gave me something to smile this morning at work after days of sniffing and coughing.
Thank you for visiting, have a happy weekend everyone.

This is for Anastasia P, USA . Hence, the delayed.Design Name : Little Miss Witch by Pam Kellog with Jewell effect and gold metallics threads. Hatyai Revisited - Part Three

The people of Thai are known to be graciously graceful and artistic. By walking its street I found these amazing collection of craft .Little crocheted devils with wings, the white one came home with me :D
Decorative paper bagsAmi key chains in various shapes - 3 for 100 bath the lady with her thread and needle
The weekend hand made craft fair
Hair pieces
made from ribbons, laces, beads, crocheted, buttons, feathers
Felt made
The hair pin fabricated from cotton material
Lots of crocheted hari pieces, the only photo I took regretably is blurry
and not all vendors allow snapshots of their products.
Coin pursesand I caught sight of their red box, very different from back home and that lady in blue is Jamis

~ The end ~
Thank you for visiting.

Hatyai Revisited - Part Two

The moment we step out of our hotel, peddlers such as these greeted us.
The Morning Street Market
What is so fascinating here is how many everyday Thai pray even by the roadside, Monks would be waiting to receive alms and blessed devotees in returns. Watching them observed age-old Buddhist rituals is a genuine slice of Thai life.
The food stuff , we were told to come here for our breakfast, its less than 3 minutes walk from our hotel. Its an open makeshift market on a street.Isn't that periuk kera (monkey cup or Nepenthes) stuffed with pulut (glutinous rice)? eatable ?
Come to think about it, if monkeys drinks from that cup, I guess it won't kill

The highlight of this trip is probably the new floating market in Khlong Hae. Situated about 10 minutes from Hatyai town, the place is line with stalls selling all kinds of Thai food or Thai infusion Food and Thai village products, while the river banks is lined with sampan peddlers offering lots of Thai authentic food.
For 20 bath, a juice of your choice in a clay made mug which is yours to take home.
Sushi, Thai style
Ulam and Condiments
I thought it was quite an indigenous way to attract visitors. The place is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
I did wonder how hygiene the food can be especially their source of water supply, Jamis and I choose to have our breakfast of Bee Hoon Soup and Fried Kway Teow at one of the coffeeshop along that street market, the one with the most people gotta be good, so we thought.
After all the eating, none of us had diarrhoea, so I guessed the food is alright or simply our immune system is good.
Last Part - Thai Craft
Thank you for stopping by.

Hatyai Revisited, Part One

Last weekend, I made a weekend getaway with a long time girlfriend, Jamis. During my last 2 trips here, my movement was rather restricted, this time I am free to explore as much as possible.

Thailand is well known for its wealth of Buddhist arts and temples , so today its all about Wat (temple)

The golden Buddha statue, the grounds was still under construction during my last visit, last year. Construction is rather slow, maybe its because the funding is all on donations from well wishes.
There was no chariot then and believed me, I never got to know the name of this wat thou this is my second visit.

Wat Pah Koh ~ Gold Sifu
Undecaying Body Of Luang Phor Thong Susangwaro, (former abbot of Wat Pahkoh)
The body of Luang Phor Thong, whose physical body shows no sign of decay after passing away in the year 2000, at the age of 93.

This Wat is famous for obtaining blessing and purifying the soul by way of taking a bath with the holy water. Buddha in a row, one for everyday of the week Maha Kassapa seated under a tree, a Buddha's disciple who was also not cremated.

Sacred Kuan Im Statue ( Goddess of Mercy), The statue of Kuan Tai, the Warrior stood at the entranceThe goddess temple is on the southern foothill of Hatyai and visible from a distance. It was said that the statue was carved from one piece of Jade and hauled to the top of the hill piece by piece is one of Thailand’s most sacred Buddha statue.
On top of the hill, stood the Golden BuddhaLooks like the stairways to heaven
Golden Buddha at the top of the stairs
The dragon tongue on the grounds of the Goddess of Mercy. ' Sitting on the tongue ' pronouce as 'chor lei' in Cantonese brings the meaning or sounds like, luck come .

Chedi Thaimongkhon Hadyai ~ Stainless Steel Pagada located on a hill about 10km from the town.
The first Buddha to greet visitor to the Stainless Steel Pagoda Main entrance to Chedi Thaimongkhon which was made from all stainless steel tubing Bells in a row, bells for every day of the week and bells for every month Three headed serpent with its body coiled around the temple grounds, a sign of guarding the temple
The exterior walls with 16 numbers of circular doors( if I recalled correctly). The polka dots on the walls are actually laid with coins, while the interior of the lower ground is design to look like a cubicle with a space for meditation purposes .
Amazingly doorways, although the building is built in a circular , the doors are align from one end to the other, with the main structure pillar that should stood in the centre of the building is somewhat missing or rather invisible. Its an amazing architecture all together !
Concealed in ceramic vases or glass cases are dust remains of monks, placed at the lower center piller which is the main center piller that holds the entire circular stainless steel tubing of the 2 storey pagoda .A seven days Wishing bowl, one must know the day (not date) of birth to try your luck in tossing a coin into the bowl. I think the bowl is about 10 ft or 12 ft high. This is the center pillar on the upper floor.
another Wishing bowl, but this is the monthly bowl. One need to point the arrow first to your month of birth and rotate the arrow . If the arrows returns to your bowl, it is said that your wish will be fulfilled.
Interior on the 2nd floor, fascinating steel works

The guide mentioned that this spot offers a spectacular sunset on a good day, apparently the day of my visit is not one ~ sigh
Up, up and away. The massive stainless steel structure making its way to the top
This stairs is a set of steps built between two floors inside the chedi ..going up
going down..this is my bad photography, it did not show the entire size of the opening between the two floors which is a small square that fit only a single person per entry.
at 6pm sharp, Thai time, the pagoda begins to lit
A couple of minutes later, the pagoda fully lit, turning it from a Stainless Steel Pagoda by day into a Crystal Pagoda by nite. Magnificent ! however, my photo did not do justice compared to the real thing !

Another unique taste of Thai culture that Thai tourism seems to be promoting the moment of arrival, besides being greeted with the gracious wai gesture, is the performance by their 'Special Ladies' , the other is their Tiger show. One of the numerous performance by the 'special ladies' with an Egyptian Theme which I find the most extravaganza displayed of costume and backdrop , and they are indeed beautiful . The guide told us that these 'ladies' lived a very pitiful life as they come from hardcore poor families whose parents would sent them, as young boys away to this 'special school' to be trained and polished until its time to be 'show girls' .

Hope you enjoyed this little tour with me and thank you for visiting.
